About Citizens Bank Opera House

Citizen's Bank Opera House

Just a few blocks from Boston Common, Citizen’s Bank Opera House in Boston, Massachusetts, is a gorgeous performing arts venue that seats 2,600 and provides space for some of the most exciting and fantastic theater events anywhere in New England. This one-of-a-kind performance space has been a part of Boston history for nearly a century, and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon!

The History of Citizen’s Bank Opera House

Opened in 1928, under the name of the B.F. Keith Memorial Theatre, this venue was originally designed as one of the premier movie houses of its day. It soon changed names to the RKO Keith’s Memorial after the formation of the Radio-Keith-Orpheum company (yes, the same Keith). The theater changed hands in 1965, becoming known as the Savoy Theater, and would remain open as a movie house until 1980. Then, it was converted into a live performance space, becoming the home of the Opera Company of Boston. Financial problems saw the space closed in 1991 and languishing for years until a renovation project in 2004 brought it back to its current glory.

What Makes Citizen’s Bank Opera House Events So Special?

The original design of this venue was considered ornate and breathtaking even back in 1928. Now that it’s been fully restored to its original opulence, stepping inside the doors of this insanely detailed and sumptuous theater is like stepping back in time. You’ll be in awe of the architecture and decor as you sit and enjoy one of Broadway’s premier musicals for sure!
