About Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd Tickets

Lynyrd Skynyrd is more than just the band that recorded the South East’s anthem, Sweet Home Alabama. They’re a Jacksonville, FL born band that has faced a lot of heartache and heartbreak, though they’ve managed to get back on their feet again.

The band has morphed over time, as a large number of the original group were killed in a 1977 plane crash. Though they took some time to grieve, the existing members have reunited and continue making music, to help their late friend’s legacies live on. Whether you became a fan of the gritty, even greasy, southern rock band back in the ’70s or you became a fan more recently, the group welcomes you into their fan club.

Tragedy Strikes

Initially, the band was made up of Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson, Billy Powell, and Bob Burns. All friends that went to high school together in Jacksonville, FL. They started playing music and were signed to MCA in 1972. Their first album, Free Bird, which featured one of their most successful songs, came out a year later.

The success of that song led them to score an opening spot with the Who on tour, and their fanbase was born. Success followed for the band until 1977. That was when Ronnie Van Zant and Steeve Gaines, both central members of the band, were killed in a plane crash.

The New Skynyrd

In the 2000s, the remaining members of the band decided to reunite. They were ready to start making music again. Knowing it was what their lost friends would have wanted them to do. Their shows started first with their Simple Man Cruise but then extended to a concert series and a few albums. The band continues to keep southern rock alive, even in the wake of the deaths of other big names in the genre.
