Before the Fame
Believe it or not, there was a time when Metallica wasn’t one of the most famous bands ever. The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1981 when drummer Lars Ulrich placed an ad in a local paper looking for fellow metalheads – and lucky for all of us, rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist James Hetfield responded. It was a meeting that would result in the formation of the band just a few months later.
Metallica’s pre-fame band lineup would fluctuate over the next couple of years. Original bassist Ron McGovney would eventually give way to Cliff Burton, and while Metallica at one time featured lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, he would go on to found Megadeth after leaving the band, as well. He was replaced by Kirk Hammett in 1983, solidifying a lineup that would make history.
Tragedy, Change and a Return to the Top
Metallica took off in the mid-'80s, catapulting Lars, James, Cliff, and Kirk to instant fame. Albums Kill ’em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets were all wildly successful, putting the metal genre on the map. Yet tragedy struck on the road when their tour bus overturned, leading to the death of Cliff Burton and leaving a void that even replacement bassist Jason Newsted couldn’t fill. He ended up being replaced in 2003 by Robert Trujillo.
The Newsted years, from 1986 to 2003, were some of the most intense for the band, seeing their rise to superstardom and experimentation with different sounds. The nu-metal stylings of Metallica during the late '90s and early '00s were highly controversial, prompting a much-applauded return to their thrash roots. Today, the modern Metallica is still a powerhouse performance band, selling out arenas around the world and bringing the power of metal to the masses like no one else.
