About Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island

Huntington Bank Pavilion

Located on a man-made peninsula just outside of Chicago, Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island – more commonly known as just good old Huntington Bank Pavilion – is an open-air amphitheater that rocks the Midwest from May to October every year. With a massive capacity of up to 30,000, this venue can really pack ’em in, leading to some of the biggest and baddest acts from anywhere and everywhere touching down to perform in the Windy City.

The History of Huntington Bank Pavilion

A long time ago, back in 2003, the land that would become Northerly Island was a municipal airport. Was, as in the current mayor of Chicago went buck-wild, and turned it into a landfill, hoping to eventually turn the area into a nature reserve and park. The idea to have a temporary music venue occupy part of the park from late spring to early fall gave birth to what was proposed as the Lakefront Pavilion, which would open in 2005 for the first time under a different name: the Charter One Pavilion.

The venue would operate as Charter One until 2013 when naming rights changed hands to FirstMerit Bank. This was also the year that the venue was redesigned to accommodate up to 30,000 fans if necessary, making it an overnight sensation for big arena shows. Finally, in 2017, Huntington Bank bought the naming rights for the pavilion, leading to the current name of the venue.
