About Irving Plaza

Irving Plaza

A block from Union Square Park in New York City, the humble address of 17 Irving Place in Manhattan, is the not-so-humble site of one of the oldest and most storied modern performance spaces in the world. We’re talking, of course, about Irving Plaza, a massive ballroom-style concert space hidden behind its iconic, but otherwise, unassuming marquee. It’s a New York institution, has been for literally a century and a half, and is continuing strong today.

The History of Irving Plaza

17 Irving Place was, originally, four different brownstone buildings built in the 1800s, until they were combined into one building in 1870 to serve as a hotel. Then, in 1927, Irving Plaza was officially born when the hotel was gutted and transformed into a ballroom. From then, until the 1970s, it was used for just about everything under the sun, from union halls to Polish Army veteran meeting houses and beyond. In 1978, it was reconstructed one last time into the legendary rock music venue it’s been ever since.
