About Ryman Auditorium
Ryman Auditorium
Nashville, Tennessee, has been the epicenter of down-home country music forever. Whether it’s country and western, bluegrass, blues, folk, gospel, or even just good old rock’n’roll, the city’s got one heck of a reputation. Nowhere is this rep more reinforced than at the Ryman Auditorium, a legendary 2,300-seat indoor venue that’s seen more iconic performances than you can shake a stick at.
The History of the Ryman Auditorium
Opening its doors in 1892 and specifically built for the Union Gospel Tabernacle for hosting big-name Christian Evangelical revivals, the nature of Ryman Auditorium, and the need to keep the doors open, saw the venue rented out to non-religious events, especially musical performances, early and often. It quickly became a nationally-famous venue, earning the nickname “The Carnegie Hall of the South” for the caliber of world-renowned performers it attracted.
The biggest and most noteworthy period of fame for the Ryman, though, began in 1943, when the wildly popular Grand Ole Opry radio show began broadcasting there. The Ryman became known as the Grand Ole Opry House and would stay that way until 1974 when the show finally relocated. Today, the Ryman is still hosting incredible performers and performances to this day, benefiting from a massive $15 million refit in 2015.
