About Soldier Field
Soldier Field
In Chicago, Illinois you’ll find Soldier Field, it may be smaller than other stadiums in the NFL, but it can still pack in the crowds. Before it was Soldier Field, this venue was the Municipal Grant Park Stadium. Designs for the stadium began in 1919 but didn’t finally finish construction until 1924. At the time it was one of the greatest stadiums built and one of Chicago’s most notorious landmarks.
The field changed its name in 1926 to honor the fallen heroes who died during the war. In its earlier years, the stadium held 74,280 people, but after the renovations, the capacity lowered to 61,500.
It was in 2002, that the stadium underwent renovations to enhance its capacity and be up to date with new technologies. However, the renovations caused the stadium to not only lower its capacity but also to lose its listing in the National Historic Landmarks. Yet, in 2016, Soldier Field was considered the second-oldest stadium in the NFL.
Many teams have called Soldier Field home. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame called Soldier Field home in 1929. In 1946 the Chicago Rockets played here as well. The Chicago Cardinals came to the stadium in 1959. However, today the Chicago Bears call Soldier Field home. The only time the Bears didn’t use the field was during the two-years-closure starting in 2002 while the stadium underwent renovations.
Soldier Field hosts an array of events other than football such as soccer games, hockey, rugby, and concerts. Musical performers like The Rolling Stones, Beyoncé, and Kenny Chesney have all performed at the Soldier Field.
