About Spartan Stadium
Spartan Stadium
In East Lansing, Michigan, not too far from the hustle and bustle of Detroit, stands Spartan Stadium. Home of NCAA football for Michigan State University for nearly a century, this massive 75,000-plus capacity open-air football stadium is the sixth-largest stadium in the Big Ten, is notorious for providing a huge home-field advantage, and is also known as the tallest building in East Lansing. This is one hefty mother of a stadium!
The History of Spartan Stadium
Spartan Stadium opened in 1923, bearing the name College Field. At that time it only had a 14,000-seat capacity, but that wouldn’t last. In fact, by 1935, that capacity was raised to 26,000, and the stadium was given a new name: Macklin Field, in honor of former coach John Macklin. This venue just kept getting bigger, though, and in 1948 it was renamed Macklin Stadium after raising its capacity to a nice, round 50,000 seats.
Expansion continued, with the quickly-growing venue being renamed Spartan Stadium in 1957. The outdoor arena would continue to be expanded, refurbished, and renovated going forward, with its last major reno occurring in 2005 to completely modernize the stadium, creating a melding of old-school 20th-century architecture and brand-new cutting-edge amenities and design.
What Makes Spartan Stadium Events So Special?
