About The Fillmore
The Fillmore
If there’s one iconic performance venue that has had as many ups and downs as the San Francisco neighborhood streets it inhabits, it’s most definitely the Fillmore. The site of some of the most seminal performances in music history, and a venue that has risen from its own ashes more often than Dumbledore’s phoenix, the Fillmore is the kind of indoor music hall that you have to experience if you want to ever say you’re a fan of music.
The History of the Fillmore
From its humble beginnings in 1912 as a dance hall and instruction studio, the Fillmore has been known by many names throughout the years. In fact, it wasn’t known as the Fillmore until 1954, which is when things really began to rock. As a result, from the 50s through the 70s the Fillmore became the place to be if you were part of the emerging San Francisco counterculture movement, and it became as well known for its psychedelic ambiance as it did for its performers.
The Fillmore’s neighborhood fell on hard times for a while, and the venue relocated elsewhere for a time. The original site was renamed the Elite Club and, ironically, became famous in the burgeoning punk rock scene. The success brought back the Fillmore name in the 80s until an earthquake shut the place down in 1989. After some major rebuilding, the site reopened once more in 1994 and the rest has been history!
