About Thompson Boling Arena

Thompson-Boling Arena

Thompson-Boling Arena is a sports and entertainment venue that’s located on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. The venue opened in 1987 and serves as the home of the Tennessee Volunteers men’s and women’s basketball teams and the women’s volleyball team. Thompson-Boling Arena is named after university benefactor B. Ray Thompson and Edward J. Boling, who was the first president of the University of Tennessee system. The court at Thompson-Boling Arena is known as “The Summitt” after legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt. For basketball games, Thompson-Boling Arena has a capacity of over 21,000 fans.

Where are the Best Places to Sit at Thompson-Boling Arena

The suite and loge levels at Thompson-Boling Arena offer the most amenities and a nice view of the court from the second level. However, sections 105 and 121 will put fans in the lower level of the venue and close to the center of the court. Sections 103 and 104 also put fans close to the action and behind the Tennessee bench, while sections 106 and 107 are behind the visiting bench. Sections 119, 120, 122, and 123 are also ideal places to get close to the court. In the second level of Thompson-Boling Arena, sections 320-322 will offer the best overall view of the court.

Tips for Visiting Thompson-Boling Arena

Thompson-Boling Arena is located on the banks of the Tennessee River, which helps provide some majestic views of both the river and downtown Knoxville. Fans who have a little time before a game should head over to Gate F, which is where they can find the best views of the river and the city, especially at night. The arena is also located close enough to downtown Knoxville for fans to soak up the college atmosphere and the friendly locals before the game. It’s also a good idea to park a little further away from the arena because traffic getting out will be a little lighter. In fact, there are both busses and trolleys to take from downtown Knoxville to the venue. The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is also a good attraction to check out around downtown Knoxville before a game.

Food to Try at Thompson-Boling Arena

The number of concession stands and food options at Thompson-Boling Arena is a little limited. However, the standard items are there, as well as a couple of Knoxville-specific places. The pulled pork sandwich at Calhoun’s BBQ is a must-try item for anyone visiting the venue for the first time. Petro’s Chilli and Chips also offers a great bowl of chili that also includes olives, jalapeños, and Frito chips.
