About A Day to Remember

A Day to Remember

Florida has given us quite a few good bands. Sure, the state isn’t necessarily known for being a music capital, but they’ve still given us Flo Rida, Tom Petty, Lynard Skynard, and A Day to Remember (to name a few).

If you wanted, you could argue that Jimmy Buffet is a Floridian artist too, but the Keys are more like the Carribean than the actual landmass. But to get back to the band at hand – A Day to Remember, they’re the first big metal band that’s come out of the Sunshine State in the last decade.

Making the Band

There are five members of A Day to Remember, and most of them are from North-Central Florida, from a mid-sized city named Ocala. You may have heard of Ocala before for a very different reason – it’s where most famous racehorses are bred. But Jeremey McKinnon, Neil Westfall, Tom Denney, Johnny Woodard, and Bobby Scruggs weren’t into horses – they wanted to make music. They wanted to make music so badly that they paid for their entire first EP themselves before they had any professional representation.

That EP was their stepping stone to a record deal, though, which they got with Indianola Records. That company helped them put out their first studio album, And Their Name Was Treason in 2005. It sold just under 10,000 copies without a marketing budget. The success allowed the band to re-sign (level up) to Victory Records, who they were represented by until 2011.

Commercial Success

Their first Victory Records debut was For Those Who Have Heart, 2007. It did well and led them to put out Homesick and What Separates Me from You, in quick succession. In 2011, album troubles struck, and the band decided to put out their fifth album, Common Courtesy, on their own. It was their highest-charting album yet – but we’re sure they’ll surpass its success in no time.
