About the Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons Tickets

For the fanatical football-lovers of the South, the NFL team of choice is obviously the Atlanta Falcons. Even without a rich tradition of success or a championship to their name, fans in the Southeast still go crazy over their Dirty Birds.

All About the Competition

Atlanta didn’t have a professional football team until 1965 when the NFL granted an expansion franchise to owner Rankin Smith as a ploy to prevent him from teaming up with the American Football League. Naturally, things were a little rough in the early days. The Falcons failed to reach the playoffs in their first 12 seasons of existence, managing just two winning seasons during that stretch.

Even after the Falcons got their first taste of postseason play in 1978, it wasn’t enough to turn the franchise around. Atlanta enjoyed just two winning seasons during the ‘80s and continued to struggle for much of the ‘90s under head coaches Jerry Glanville and June Jones. No matter what they tried, the Falcons had no division championships to claim between 1980 and 1998, much less a deep playoff run to enjoy.

So Close But So Far Away

Under head coach Dan Reeves, the Falcons finally had a breakthrough season in 1998, going 14-2 and reaching the first Super Bowl in franchise history, only to be blown out in the big game by the Broncos. After that, success was hard to come by in Atlanta until the start of the Matt Ryan and Mike Smith era in 2008.

With Ryan, the Falcons finally had a quarterback to build around. They reached the playoffs six times in a 10-year span. Of course, success only led to heartbreak for the Falcons. At halftime of Super Bowl LI, the Falcons looked assured of their first-ever championship, only to suffer an epic collapse in the 2nd half against the Patriots. It was a golden opportunity that the Falcons let slip away. Based on their history, it’s an opportunity that may not come around again any time soon. But we’ll be here waiting when it does.
