The Brooklyn Nets get a lot of flack. Too many people view them as New York City’s “other” NBA team, constantly in the shadow of their Manhattan cousins, the Knicks. Either that or they’re thought of as unwelcome carpetbaggers from nearby New Jersey, pulling up tent stakes and relocating into a trendy new neighborhood.
Well, those assumptions are wrong—dead wrong. The Nets are a pro basketball franchise like no other, with decades of history and a legacy that’s nearly unmatched.
11. Where do the Nets play?
Since their relocation from New Jersey in 2012, the Brooklyn Nets play their home games at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn’s Pacific Park complex. The arena is the first pro sports venue located in the borough since the Brooklyn Dodgers left in the 1950s, also serving as one of the two stadiums for the NHL’s Long Islanders, who split their time between the Barclays Center and Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island.

More About the Nets
Once upon a time, in a different league altogether
The Nets were founded in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans and played in the American Basketball Association, a rival league to the NBA that began the same year. At the end of the season, the team moved to Long Island, renaming themselves the New York Nets, which stuck until the ABA joined the NBA in 1976. The following year, the Nets moved back to New Jersey, where they remained for the next 35 years. It was only in 2012 that the team would return to New York again.
The Nets have paid their dues, and then some
Let’s be honest: the Nets have had it rough. The team’s NBA career has been filled with ups and downs, which has made it really hard to be a Nets fan. Yet whenever they’re based in New York, the Nets seem to have pretty good luck. Dating back to their ABA days, the Nets had the honor and privilege of being led by the legendary Julius Erving for a time, with Dr. J helping usher in two ABA championships during his tenure with the team.
The early 2000s were also a magical time for the Nets, as the then-Jersey team clawed and scraped its way to making two NBA Finals showings in 2002 and 2003. Jason Kidd, the Nets point guard during this era, was one of the team’s unsung heroes, leading the Nets proudly out of the shadows of their checkered past.
The move to Brooklyn
Relocating back to New York in 2012 has certainly been a step in the right direction for the team, which has once again been rechristened as the Brooklyn Nets. The team made the postseason consistently for the first three years after the move, proving that there was more than a little gas left in the tank of the old Nets. There are sure to be plenty of challenges for the Nets down the road, but the team is up to the task. With the Nets’ tenacity, greatness is just within reach!
