More about the Spurs
Everything’s bigger in Texas, and the San Antonio Spurs are no exception. The Spurs have it all – blistering offense, great D, and one of the winningest records in the NBA. You don’t just play the Spurs; you get out of their way if you don’t want to get flattened.
From Odd Man Out to NBA Monster
The Spurs came to life in 1967 with a different name, in a different town, and in a different league altogether. The Dallas Chaparrals – soon renamed the Texas Chaparrals – were a member of the ABA, even after they relocated to San Antonio in 1973 and changed their name to the Spurs. The team was one of only a few to survive the merge of the ABA and NBA in 1976.
The Spurs went through a bit of an adjustment after transitioning to the NBA, but once they got that ball rolling there was no stopping this team. Picking up their first division titles in 1978 and 1979, the Spurs would go on to amass 20 more from 1981 to 2017, bagging their last six in the seven years between 2011 and 2017. Follow that up with six conference titles and five NBA Finals wins, all between 1999 and 2014, and the Spurs are easily the team to beat if you want to be considered a contender.
Coach Pop Socking It To Them
The Spurs have had some talented players on the roster over the years, but there’s one man who's held it all together. Since 1996, head coach Gregg Popovich has been at the helm with fantastic results.
Coach Pop, who’s also the team’s president and general manager, has one of the best records in pro sports – not just the NBA. For 22 seasons straight he led the Spurs to winning records and has been instrumental in the team winning all five of their NBA Finals – yet another record. Coach Pop is absolutely the Spurs’ not-so-secret weapon, and he’s sure as heck loaded for bear!
