More About the Hornets

The story of the Charlotte Hornets is complicated, considering that there have actually been two versions of the franchise. The original Hornets were founded in 1988 and were based in Charlotte until 2002 before moving to New Orleans. They would remain the Hornets until 2013, when the franchise changed their name to the Pelicans.

The Hornets of today actually began as a completely different team altogether in 2004: the Charlotte Bobcats. When the early Hornets renamed to the Pelicans, the team’s name, records, and official history went back to Charlotte. So, in 2014 the Charlotte Bobcats because the Charlotte Hornets, and the rest is history.

The Old Guard

From the very beginning, the original Hornets were able to shake off the typical expansion team curse. After getting its footing, the franchise almost immediately made a name for itself by securing a berth in the playoffs seven times in ten seasons, winning the first round several times. While they never advanced past the semifinals, such excellent performance from a team that young was pretty phenomenal.

So, it was a shock to see the team suddenly pull up tent stakes and move to New Orleans amid such success. Scandals swirling around the Hornets’ then-owner, George Shinn, were the final nail in the coffin that made the Hornets kiss Charlotte goodbye for years.

From Bobcats to Hornets

While Shinn’s ugly behavior left a bad taste in the mouths of Charlotte fans, the city was eager for more basketball. Enter: the Bobcats. Unlike the original Hornets, the Bobcats were not powerhouses right out of the gate.

Instead, Charlotte’s newest ball team showed measured improvement over time, breaking through the typical expansion team issues to make it to the first round of the playoffs in 2010 and 2014. Then, with the Hornets name returning to Charlotte once again, the team pushed to the playoffs once again in 2016. The road might have been long and winding, but the Hornets are back home and ready to rock once again!
