About Mavericks vs. Jazz

Jazz vs Mavericks Tickets

In the NBA, rivalries always seem to come and go. One older rivalry that always seems to be simmering is the one between the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks. For more than two decades, the Jazz and Mavericks both took up real estate in the Midwest Division, meeting each other a handful of times every season. In the early 2000s, there were even some tight races between Utah and Dallas for the top spot in the division. Even if they no longer share a division or play each other as frequently, there is still a simmering rivalry between the Jazz and Mavs that could heat up at any time.

Jazz vs Mavericks

In addition to all of those years of playing in the same division, the Jazz and Mavericks have also battled in the playoffs on multiple occasions. The first meeting came in the 1986 playoffs when they were the no. 4 and 5 seeds. Despite the best efforts from Karl Malone, a more balanced Dallas team took the series 3-1. The two teams met under similar circumstances in the 2001 playoffs. Once again, it was Malone who shined early in the series, leading the Jazz to wins in the first two games. However, Dirk Nowitzki helped the Mavs turn the series around, winning Game 3 and 4 to force a decisive Game 5 in Utah, a game the Mavs won 84-83 on a game-winning layup with 10 seconds left on the clock.

The Jazz still make their home in the same arena where they lost that playoff game in a devastating fashion. Of course, the venue is now known as Vivint Arena. But it still provides the Jazz with a home court that is favorable to them and hostile to visiting teams. Meanwhile, the Mavericks now play in the American Airlines Center, which opened a few months after they eliminated the Jazz from the 2001 playoffs. Known affectionately as The Hangar, it has provided the Mavs with one of the best home courts and energetic fanbases in the NBA.
