More About the Miami Heat
Welcome to Miami—one of the hottest cities in the country, in more ways than one. Whether you’re lounging on the beach or indulging in the city’s infamous nightlife, Miami is brimming with energy. In fact, the name of the city’s basketball team—the Miami Heat—says it all.
The Miami Heat may be one of the younger expansion teams in the NBA, but they’ve lit up the league like no other. Since their inaugural year in 1988, they’ve brought the spirit of Miami to life on the court and have created a legacy that any Heat fan or Miami native can take pride in.
The First Decade
The 1990s were a legendary time for many ball teams, but the Heat hit the decade hard and fast. Miami was big and bad, with monsters like Tim Hardaway, PJ Brown, and Alonzo Mourning exuding an on-court presence that challenged even some of their toughest competitors. The Heat’s rough, take-no-prisoners style was effective, considering that the team took four division titles in a row from 1997 through 2000.
During the ’90s, the Heat would develop a rivalry against another rough-and-ready team, the New York Knicks. The competition grew even more dramatic when Knicks head coach Pat Riley jumped ship from NY and took a coaching job in Miami in 1995, kicking the rivalry into high gear. Riley got the last laugh with that one, considering he’s been with the Heat in some capacity ever since.
Miami’s Hottest Legends
The ’90s ended with a bang for the Heat, but Miami’s newest basketball franchise was just warming up. Dwayne Wade helped the team win a title in 2006, aided by of the court, Shaquille O’Neal. And when fellow superstars Chris Bosh and LeBron James joined Wade on the roster in the early 2010s, the Heat became a dominant force in the NBA. The legendary trio—affectionately nicknamed the Big Three—were practically unstoppable.
Well, maybe not entirely. After back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013, the Heat’s winning streak came to an end the following year, when the team lost to the Spurs, falling short of a three-peat victory.
The good news is that with a team this young, there’s still plenty of to continue to be showstoppers. With Dwayne Wade back in a Heat jersey, the future is certainly brighter. As anyone can tell you, Heat always rises to the top!
