More about the Toronto Raptors
The mid-‘90s was a great era for the NBA and an even better one for the city of Toronto. The Raptors were founded in 1995, making them the first and only Canadian NBA team, a title they hold to this day. It’s proven to be one of the best moves the league has ever taken, as this young team has given back in a major way to its fans from the very beginning.
A strong start
It’s tough being an expansion team, and Toronto certainly took a year or two to gain its footing within the league. But in 1998—just a few years into their tenure in the NBA—the Raptors came out of the gates strong, with the great Vince Carter leading the charge. The next few years would be filled with drama and excitement, as the team matured and evolved into a true competitor.
The city rallied around their NBA team in a major way, setting league attendance records and even spearheading a push that saw Toronto make it to the playoffs three years running. That’s nothing to shake a stick at, especially when there was no NBA team in Toronto just a few years prior!
Contender status
Chris Bosh stepped into a leadership role after Carter’s departure in 2004, and it paid off. The results were clear, with the Raptors making the playoffs in both 2007 and 2008. A few years later, Bosh rotated out and the Raptors power couple of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry stepped up to dominate the Toronto backcourt.
Toronto fans witnessed some of the most dramatic Raptors battles during this time, with the team consistently making it within reach of the playoffs. The constant clashing with other teams and the Raptors’ ability to compete with the likes of LeBron James and other league superstars made for exciting shows on the court and led to some solid rivalries that were fun to watch.
Modern Raptors on the hunt
The DeRozan/Lowry era came to an end with DeRozan departing the team in 2018, but this change-up hasn’t clipped the Raptors’ wings just yet. The addition of Kahwi Leonard helped Toronto push hard in the 2018/2019 season, setting franchise records left and right. Not only did they start the season with a 6-0 record, but the Raptors also reached 20 wins in just 24 games.
Good things are coming for Toronto. The team has a dedicated fan base, a talented roster, and a solid legacy, all pushing it forward into greatness. The Raptors are, by all indications, going to be the team to watch for years to come!
