About the Washington Capitals
Washington Capitals Tickets
They say slow and steady wins the race, and few NHL teams are better proof than the Washington Capitals. After joining the NHL as an expansion team in 1974, it’s been a long but worthwhile journey to the top of the heap. They started from the bottom but have ultimately become one of the NHL’s most elite teams, culminating with a Stanley Cup Trophy win in 2018.
Typical Problems
The Capitals are a classic example of an expansion franchise that had trouble competing right off the bat. Washington failed to qualify for the playoffs in their first eight seasons, typically finishing last in their division. Luckily, those dark days wouldn’t last forever. Beginning with the 1982-83 season, the Capitals reached the playoffs for 14 consecutive years. Playoff series wins were hard to come by during that stretch, as Washington only reached the Conference Finals once and never made the Stanley Cup Finals. But those seasons allowed the Capitals to break their reputation as perennial doormats.
The Next Level
Washington’s 14-year playoff streak was snapped in 1997. But the Capitals followed it up the next year by reaching the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history, though they were swept by the Red Wings in the Finals. In 2001, they traded for star Jaromir Jagr and gave him the largest contract in NHL history at the time, sending a message to the rest of the league that they were serious about winning.
To be fair, the addition of Jagr didn’t exactly work out, and the Capitals experienced mixed results for a number of years. Undeterred, the team rose to prominence during the 2007-08 season, which began a stretch of nine division titles in a 12-year span. Along the way, the Capitals won Presidents’ Trophies in 2010, 2016, and 2017. They finally found their breakthrough during the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning a conference championship for just the second time in franchise history and winning the Stanley Cup to complete their journey to the top.
