About the Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago Blackhawks Tickets

As one of the Original Six teams in the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks have more history than most hockey franchises. They’ve had nearly a century to build rivalries, win championships, and establish unique traditions – like the one that started during the 1985 playoffs in which fans cheer and applaud during the national anthem.

In the Beginning

The Blackhawks started playing in 1926 and came under attack early. It took until their fourth season to have a winning season, but they eventually got their act together, winning the Stanley Cup in both 1934 and 1938. Unfortunately for the Blackhawks, it would be a long time until they could call themselves champions again. Starting with the 1946-47 season, the Blackhawks entered a dark period, reaching the playoffs just once in 11 years.

Back in the Groove

Thankfully, by the late 1950s, the Blackhawks had found their groove. They defeated the hated Red Wings to win the 1961 Stanley Cup and missed the playoffs just once between 1959 and 1997. Despite just one other trip to the Stanley Cup Finals during that time, Chicago became a model for consistency, winning 12 division titles during that era.

Almost a Dynasty?

Following another dark period in which Chicago made the playoffs just once in nine seasons, the Blackhawks re-emerged as one of the NHL’s pre-eminent teams toward the end of the last decade of the 21st century. After falling to the Red Wings in the Western Conference Finals in 2009, the Blackhawks won their first Stanley Cup in nearly 50 years in 2010.

The Blackhawks went on to win the Cup again in 2013 and 2015, giving them a total of six championships all-time and three in a six-year period. Alas, even with a Presidents’ Trophy added to the case during the 2012-13 season, it wasn’t enough for the NHL to declare the Blackhawks a dynasty. One more Stanley Cup win might have been enough to earn that distinction, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Blackhawks play?

After spending 65 seasons playing at historic Chicago Stadium, the Blackhawks moved into their current home, the United Center, in 1995.
