About the Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver Canucks Tickets
Though their time in the NHL dates back to just 1970, the heritage of the Vancouver Canucks extends much further back than that. The franchise was first founded in 1945, spending 25 years playing in the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL) before joining the NHL. Of course, despite spending nearly 50 years in the NHL, the Canucks have yet to lift the Stanley Cup, although they’ve been painfully close at times.
The Old Days
The Canucks got off to a strong start, winning the PCHL championship in their first-ever season and then again in the 1947-48 season. Vancouver’s success continued after they moved into the WHL in 1952. The Canucks won four championships in 18 WHL seasons, including back-to-back titles in 1969 and 1970, their final two seasons before becoming an NHL expansion team.
Not So Lucky
Unfortunately for the Canucks, the tides changed when they joined the NHL. Vancouver failed to reach the playoffs in their first four NHL seasons and six of their first eight seasons. It wasn’t until their 12th season in the NHL that the Canucks won their first playoff series. Of course, it appeared to be worth the wait for their fans, as the Canucks went on to win three playoff series that year, reaching the finals in 1982 before getting swept by the Islanders.
That was the first of three occasions that the Canucks have played in the Stanley Cup Finals. The second came in 1994 when they were thwarted by another New York team, the Rangers. This time, the Canucks forced the series to seven games but lost 3-2 in a heartbreaking Game 7. It was a similar story in 2011 when the Canucks lost a seven-game series to the Bruins, once again falling a little short of their first-ever Stanley Cup win.
