More About the Wizards

The Washington Wizards get one hell of a bad rap. Sure, they’ve got odd history, and they might bear the blemish of where Michael Jordan’s career came to die, but the team is more than just that. Here’s what you might not know about the Wizards – but should.

60 Years of Weirdness Leaves a Mark

This topsy-turvy franchise got its start in 1961, though at that time they were nowhere near our nation’s Capital. The team that would one day relocate to Washington DC began life as the Chicago Packers, as the first modern expansion team in the NBA.

A name change came following year when they became the Chicago Zephyrs. And in 1963 they pulled up stakes and relocate to Maryland, filling the void (and the name) left by the old Baltimore Bullets, who folded in 1954. A decade later and the team renamed itself the Capital Bullets, and the following year they became the Washington Bullets. Finally, in 1997 they landed on a name that stuck – the Wizards.

Finding an Identity

The Wizards have gone by a lot of names, and along the way, they’ve struggled to find an identity, too. Despite the constant change, though, there was no lack of excellent performance during this time. Let’s face it, any team that makes appearances in four NBA Finals, one of which they won in 1978, has shown they can hustle. With 28 playoff appearances, four conference wins, and seven division wins (the most recent in 2017), it’s obvious that it won’t always be easy to find cheap Wizards tickets. Yet at the same time, there’s been more than a few gaps in the team’s performance over the decades.

The inaugural season as the Washington Wizards was pretty solid with 42 wins and 40 losses, but the bottom fell out shortly thereafter. Even the much-publicized return of Michael Jordan from retirement in 2001 at the age of 38 couldn’t solve the Wizards’ problems. In fact, relying too much on the aging Jordan saw him riding the pine due to injury more than he was on the court, and in 2003 he was gone, baby, gone – just like the Wizards’ chances at greatness.

Modern Relevance Once Again

It took about a decade to emerge from the doldrums, but today’s Wizards are all about those buckets, baby. From 2013 through 2017, the Wizards have been perennial playoffs contenders, making it to the first round four times in five years and advancing to the semifinals three of those times.

It looks like the Wizards have finally hit their stride. What’s next for this DC franchise? It’s up in the air, but it’s lookin’ pretty darn good to us. We’d keep an eye on these guys for sure!
