About the Iowa State Basketball
Iowa State Basketball Tickets
The Iowa State Cyclones look like a team that the college basketball world should watch closely in the years to come. Granted, the Cyclones aren’t a traditional power, which means it’s still common to find cheap Iowa State basketball tickets from time to time. But the program has had success in the past. So, in the years to come, expect last-minute Iowa State basketball tickets to be in high demand as the Cyclones continue to make their mark in the Big 12.
Louis, Louis
The first great era in Iowa State basketball history came under head coach Louis Menze. Despite taking over in 1928, it wasn’t until the 40s that Menze turned the Cyclones into a winner. In 1941, ISU won its first of three Big Six Conference championships in a five-year span. That stretch also included the first Final Four in program history in 1944.
It Was the 80s
ISU’s next resurgence came in the 1980s under head coach Johnny Orr. During his 14-year tenure, Orr took the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament six times, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 1986. Orr’s tenure is also remembered for a massive increase in attendance and fan interest for Iowa State home games. It was also during this time that the phrase “Hilton Magic” was coined, referring to Iowa State’s propensity for pulling off upsets at Hilton Coliseum and winning over 75% of their home games.
Hometown Hero
When former Iowa State player Fred Hoiberg took over as ISU’s head coach in 2010, he helped take the program to new heights. Hoiberg left after five seasons to take a job in the NBA, but not before he took the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament in four straight seasons while also winning back-to-back Big 12 Tournament titles. When Steve Prohm took the reins, he led Iowa State to three more appearances in the Big Dance and two more Big 12 Tournament titles in his first four seasons in Ames. Thanks to Hoiberg and Prohm, the Cyclones are on the rise and in the midst of arguably the best stretch in program history.
